The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History launched “The Philanthropy Initiative” today – which, not coincidentally, is “Giving Tuesday” – along with a new exhibit on “Giving in America” and an all-day symposium called “The Power of Giving: Philanthropy’s Impact on American Life.” Among the speakers at the symposium are Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and OSI-Baltimore director Diana Morris, along with several other people whose work has intersected with OSI.
Morris spoke during a session called “Rising to the Challenge: Baltimore’s Response to Opportunity and Crisis,” talking about OSI-Baltimore’s efforts to build on the momentum generated by the Baltimore Uprising with the Baltimore Justice Fund and other initiatives. The session was organized by OSI-Baltimore board member Jamie McDonald, who has long been involved with Giving Tuesday efforts. She spoke during the session, along with Joe Jones, CEO of the Center for Urban Families and vice-chairman of OSI-Baltimore’s board of directors, Enoch Pratt Free Library CEO and former OSI board member Carla Hayden, 2012 Community Fellow Sarah Hemminger, and Ricardo Amparo, who learned how to shoot video as a member of OSI-Baltimore grantee Wide Angle Youth Media.
The museum describes the Philanthropy Initiative as “a long-term project to collect, research, document, and exhibit materials relating to the history and impact of American philanthropy. Changing exhibits, programs, and public outreach explore the collaborative power of giving in all forms and at all levels across a wide spectrum of issues and movements.”
