The Safe and Just Communities portfolio reframes the focus of the Criminal and Juvenile Justice Program to be community-centered and intersectional. It funds organizations that seek to reduce the use of incarceration and its social and economic costs without compromising community safety. Grantees promote justice systems that are fair and reflect community values and priorities. The Safe and Just Communities portfolio supports advocacy, public education, research, grassroots organizing, and demonstration projects that focus on reforming racial and social inequities at critical stages of the criminal and juvenile justice systems—from prevention to reentry into the community.
