Herbert Sturz, the onetime deputy mayor of New York City who founded the Vera Institute of Justice and relentlessly sought to reshape the criminal justice system, died last week at 90.
Sturz was an early member of OSI-Baltimore’s Advisory Board and served as a liaison with colleagues in New York.
“Herb was an incredible man,” says Diana Morris, director of OSI-Baltimore from its founding in 1998 until 2019. “He had a big influence on our first grants, in particular supporting the creation of after-school programs in Baltimore. We were really fortunate to be among the many institutions and places that benefited from Herb’s audacious vision and know-how. Herb was an incredible mentor and friend, always supportive and encouraging. I will always cherish my conversations with him.”
