On Monday, OSI-Baltimore hosted a delegation of Nicaraguan human rights advocates who were looking to learn more about OSI’s work to increase civic engagement, including the Blueprint for Baltimore project as part of the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program.
Among those in attendance were representatives from the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy, Building Nicaragua, University Coordination for Democracy and Justice, University Students Coalition, Permanent Commission on Human Rights, Superior Council of the Private Enterprise, and the Mothers of April Association.
Members of the delegation described the extraordinary difficulty they have faced in attempting to build community power, including governmental intimidation and threats. We discussed potential tools that could be used to advocate for communities without putting them at risk.
