Recently, 2017 OSI Community Fellow Shantell Roberts was named by Governor Hogan to serve on the State Child Fatality Review Team. The purpose of the CFR team is to prevent child deaths by understanding the causes and incidence of child deaths; Implementing changes within the agencies represented on the State CFR Team to prevent child deaths; and advising the Governor, the General Assembly, and the public on changes to law, policy, and practice to prevent child deaths.
After losing her infant daughter in 2011, Roberts founded Touching Young Lives which focuses on public education for best practices in infant care. Roberts used her fellowship to get the Portable Alternative Crib (P.A.C.) as well as information on safe sleeping methods for babies to as many parents as possible. The P.A.C is a lightweight cardboard box that serves as a bassinet.
