In a letter sent to Governor Larry Hogan a week after he announced his budget for fiscal year 2020, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the ACLU of Maryland, both grantees of OSI-Baltimore’s Education and Youth Development program, “ask that the State’s budget and any legislation on school facilities incorporate funding to remediate both the adequacy gap and the deteriorating school facilities in Baltimore — as the Maryland constitution requires, the Court has ruled, and as children in the city deserve.” Read the groups’ announcement here.
Baltimore City Public Schools released a statement thanking the groups for their advocacy and noting that, “[a]ccording to its own analysis, the state has been underfunding Baltimore’s public schools by $290 million annually.”
