Recently, 2018 OSI Community Fellow, Brittany Young was interviewed by Forbes Magazine. In “Innovation is a Fancy Word for Survival,” Young talks about her project, B-360, which uses Baltimore’s dirt bike culture to not only introduce young people to education and career opportunities in the STEM fields but also to change perceptions of the sport.
Young talks about turning something that’s criminalized in the city into something positive for the youth involved. “There’s a dirt bike culture here and it is viewed negatively,” she says. “It is a misdemeanor to be in possession of a dirt bike, a misdemeanor to ride on private property, a misdemeanor to ride on public property.”
But, she says, “most dirt bike riders have been fixing bikes since they were kids. They’re self-taught mechanics.” With her project, she can get kids interested in engineering and get them out of traffic.
