Morgan State University Professor Dr. Lawrence Brown, a 2012 OSI Community Fellow and recent honoree, was included in the “Root 100,” The Root’s annual list of the 100 most influential African-Americans aged 25 to 45, at number 61. Among other locals on the list are artist Amy Sherald (number 35) and gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous (number 38).
In June, at the first event in OSI’s 20th Anniversary Speaker Series, OSI presented Dr. Brown with a “Bold Thinker” award, in part for his “White L vs. Black Butterfly” framework for talking about segregation in Baltimore. Dr. Leana Wen was the other honoree.
The final event in the 20th Anniversary Speaker Series is on October 30th, with featured speaker Patrick Garpard, the president of Open Society Foundations and former US Ambassador to South Africa, and honorees Kurt Schmoke and Lois Feinblatt. We will also announce the 2018 cohort of Community Fellows and publicly recognize the 200 members of our Fellowships network, including Dr. Brown. Tickets available here, free for students and educators using the code “OSISchools.”
