In March, Open Society Institute reported that the United States District Court for the District of Maryland ruled in favor of a transgender student in a suit filed by OSI-supported FreeState Justice (formerly FreeState Legal), the ACLU, and the ACLU of Maryland. The court ruled that students’ right to use the restroom and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity is protected by federal law.
Last week, a settlement agreement was reached with Talbot County Public School giving the student permanent access to restrooms, locker rooms, and other facilities owned and/or operated by the Board of Education that are designated for boys or men.
OSI’s Education and Youth Development program supported FreeState Justice to help the organization improve conditions for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in Maryland with a particular goal of making schools safe spaces for LGBTQ youth.
